Golf and planespotting
Anglesey Golf Club in the picturesque village of Rhosneigr happens to be the best links course on the whole island, in fact it is the only links course on the island, designed 100 years ago by the famous Harold Horsefall Hilton, who won the Open and designed several courses including Royal Liverpool.
Only twenty one bunkers, no trees and a river that features on only the 18th, the course still presents a significant challenge and is a real revelation to those who appreciate the purest form of golf.
What you may not know is that whilst playing these old links you might experience a really close up view of the following metal birds, Merlins from Boscombe Down, The American Strike Eagles are regular visitors, usually in twos from Fakenham. Black Hawks are an everyday sighting with occasional visits from Scampton by the fleet of famous Red Hawks, the Red Arrows. Another native of Rhosneigr is the yellow and Black Griffin, watch out for these doing their practice hovering over the ninth green.
Harriers and blackbirds and ospreys
Previous visitors, now sadly extinct, were the fantastic grey Harriers and the old yellow Sea Kings. A little known fact is that we once, in the 1980’s had a visit of Americas most secret bird, the infamous Blackbird, that was apparently capable of flying to very edge of space. Maybe one day we will get to see another of America’s most versatile birds, the new hovering Osprey.
So if you are a fan of these metal birds and you enjoy links golf and a friendly club, contact Gary on 01407 811127 and come and play what you might find to be possibly the most interesting golf course in the country.
NB, Anglesey Golf Club is situated at the end of the main runway for RAF Valley, one of the busiest bases in the country. It is home to the RAF fast jet training school and the search and rescue training unit for all military helicopter pilots. This base also trains pilots from several other countries and is frequently visited by some of the world’s best military aircraft.
